The Courtauld Commitment 2025

Reducing food waste, cutting carbon and protecting critical water resources.

Our ambitious voluntary agreement brings together organisations across the food system to make food & drink production and consumption more sustainable.

At its heart is a ten-year commitment to identify priorities, develop solutions and implement changes to cut the carbon and waste associated with food & drink by at least one-fifth in 10 years, and to reduce water stress.

What is Courtauld 2025?

Our latest data shows that the strategies developed under Courtauld 2025, and delivered through wide-ranging partnerships, are working. Start your journey with WRAP and unlock the economic and environmental benefits for your organisation, choose your sector from the menu below:

Retailers

Retailers have a unique position within the supply chain to affect change in production, manufacturing, and consumer behaviour.

By collaborating with WRAP and using our tools, guidance and research, retailers can enable their supply chains to be more resource efficient, encourage consumers to reduce their waste, and support third-sector organisations to redistribute more surplus food to those in need.

Manufacturing & Supply Chain

Manufacturers have a key role in the supply chain; they can leverage change from the farm, directly to the supermarket shelf, and they are stewards of critical resources such as water.

By making their production processes more efficient, manufacturers are instrumental in protecting key resources - food, water carbon. It makes good business sense too.

Hospitality and Food Service

Hotels, restaurants, pubs, fast-food outlets and other organisations in this sector can play a vital role in reducing food waste – from how they manage left-overs and plate waste, to helping their customers reduce food waste out of home.

Through our Hospitality and Food Service Agreement (HaFSA) the hospitality sector saved over £67million and cut 11% from food packaging and waste.

Many of these organisations are continuing to collaborate with WRAP through the Courtauld Commitment 2025, and our brand new campaign “Guardians of Grub” supports food businesses with simple steps and handy resources to reduce the amount of food thrown away.

Agriculture

WRAP research has taken the first steps in mapping the scale of food waste in primary production. Projects to improve forecasting and maximise crop utilisation are now underway and our Food Waste Reduction Roadmap grower guidance helps to measure in-field food surplus and waste.

Water is a critical resource for agriculture. With the Courtauld 2025 Water Ambition we are focusing on improving supplier resilience linked to water availability, water quality, flooding and soil protection.

Local Authorities

Creating partnerships between local authorities, third-sector companies and commercial organisations is essential for improving food and drink sustainability.

By using our resources local authorities can find innovative ways of communicating with residents and creating working partnerships with commercial and third-sector organisations to increase food and packaging waste collections.

Our reports, guides, tools and case studies provide practical examples and cases of best practice that all local authorities can benefit from. To find out more, please use the links below:

The Courtauld Commitment 2025

Signatories to the Courtauld Commitment 2025 agree to work toward a collective goal: to cut the amount of resource needed to provide our food and drink by one-fifth in 10 years.
The targeted overall outcomes from 2015 to 2025 calculated as a relative reduction per head of population, are:

- 20% reduction in food and drink waste arisings in the UK

- 20% reduction in the GHG intensity of food and drink consumed in the UK

- A reduction in impact associated with water use in the supply chain

To achieve these outcomes we are working together across the entire food chain, from producer to consumer, to deliver changes which we cannot realise individually.

Currently over 156 organisations are signed up to the Courtauld Commitment 2025 as either business signatories or engagement partners.
