Over 100 hospitality and food service companies sign up to Hospitality and Food Service Agreement

Over 100 companies, which represents 19% of the hospitality and food service sector, have now signed up to the recently launched Hospitality and Food Service voluntary agreement to cut food and associated packaging waste and increase recycling – initiated by the four UK governments and WRAP.

If 25% of businesses in the sector measured by turnover, sign up to the agreement, they could save a total of £76 million and reduce their CO2 emissions by 570,000 tonnes over the period of the agreement. In three months since the launch of the agreement the numbers of leading companies, signatories and supporters signed up has grown from 70 to well over 100.  Recent signatories represent the breadth of the sector and include Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons restaurant, Marston’s, the independent pub and retailing business, Accor UK & Ireland, hotel chain, the Institute of Hospitality, professional body and contract caterers ISS, Mitie and Vacherin.

This UK-wide voluntary agreement was launched by WRAP in June on behalf of UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland governments. It aims to cut food and associated packaging waste by 5% and increase the overall rate of food and packaging waste that is being recycled, sent to anaerobic digestion or composted to 70% by 2015. 

The Agreement aims to help all size of businesses across the sector, including schools, hospitals, staff canteens, restaurants, pubs and hotels.

These organisations are demonstrating real leadership in waste prevention and waste management that will help them realise both financial and environmental benefits. It is about having a joined up approach across the sector and we encourage more to sign up, whatever your size, and be part of this driving force for change.”

To ensure effective delivery of the voluntary agreement, industry working groups are currently being formed to help inform the way forward, this will be supported by a developing evidence base.

1. Based on associated food and packaging waste analysis for pubs, restaurants, hotels and QSRs. Supporters are organisations that work within the sector but are not delivering meals/snacks directly to the customer.
2. Organisations that opt to sign up to the Voluntary Agreement either join as signatories or supporters, depending on their role within the sector.
3. The voluntary agreement runs from 2012 to 2015. Reporting will factor in the calendar years so runs for four years. Baseline figures are 2012.
4. The overall objective of this action is to prevent food packaging waste arising within the hospitality and food service sector. Where waste does arise, the objective is to work through the waste hierarchy to increase recycling and recovery rates, therefore reducing waste being sent to landfill.
