This case study looks at two projects that adopted a best practice approach to Materials Management Planning, in accordance with CL:AIRE’s recently published “Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice”.

Key points
  • Avoided cost premium remediation over both sites totalled more than £1m
  • A material management plan tracked use, quantities, storage and final destinations of materials
  • On the former BPC & Wheelspan Site the cost premium avoided for dig and dump solution was £850k

Overview

In each case, the developer benefited from substantial reductions in cost, shortened programmes and reduced impact on the local environment.

The remediation of sites with contaminated soils can be a costly and complex exercise. Because of escalating Landfill Tax and the pressure to demonstrate sustainability means clients and developers are now setting requirements for more efficient remediation solutions and asking their designers to develop strategies that avoid the traditional ‘dig and dump’ solution.

MANNER-NPK Tool

The difference between readily available and total nutrient contents could make fertiliser planning complicated, but the free to use MANNER-NPK tool can help you integrate digestate and compost use into your fertiliser planning.
