Increasing recycling in urban areas, particularly from flats, is difficult and challenging. This report seeks to identify and test measures that could help increase recycling in urban areas and cities, with specific focus on flatted properties.
- The guidance is accompanied by a series of case studies which detail the methodology and results of WRAP-funded pilots with local authorities designed to increase the capture of recyclables from flatted properties.
- WRAP has also produced a suite of communications resources specifically designed for targeting residents who live in high density urban areas.
Known barriers to participation in recycling in urban areas, identified through previous WRAP studies are wide-ranging.
They include higher levels of deprivation within the resident population and greater transience of residents, limited access to recycling services and physical restrictions on space for storing recyclable materials, both inside the home and externally, prior to collection.
This report provides information on the outcomes of a project which aimed to identify methods to improve recycling performance in urban areas.
