Redistributing surplus food from farms can help those who do not have enough to feed themselves, reduce food waste and ensure that the hard effort of farmers and growers does not go to waste.

Those who have not redistributed surplus before may like to know that as well as collecting harvested products some organisations can pay for surplus, cover your costs of harvesting surplus or glean unharvested crops. Those that provide gleaning will:

  • Provide coordinators to manage teams of volunteers
  • Work with trained volunteers who know how to pick without damaging trees/plants
  • Undertake and implement health and safety risk assessments
  • Provide their own insurance cover
