Tracking the UK's progress towards achieving the Courtauld 2030 food waste target and UN Sustainable Development Goal target 12.3.

The 2023 GHG update report we present here summarises the progress made towards the Courtauld 2030 GHG emissions target and the action WRAP is taking on the key issue of company level scope 3 GHG measurement and reporting to embed a target, measure act approach in the sector.

The report also gives an update on WRAPs role in increasing level of co-ordinated action by the food sector on this vital issue.

This report provides estimates of the quantity and types of food and drink waste generated by UK households in 2021/22. The report also looks at the reasons for discarding, the financial cost, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to wasted food. 

Welcome to the WRAP Food Trends & KPI Survey, a bi-annual exploration of UK households' attitudes, knowledge, and behaviours related to food waste. As the longest-running survey of its kind, it offers a unique lens into the ever-evolving landscape of food waste in the UK.

In November 2021, 65 stakeholders and partners from across all sectors of the UK food industry and water stewardship community made a commitment to collectively address water risk in the food and drink supply chain across the world and joined WRAP’s Water Roadmap, embarking on a collective journey to address water risk in our food & drink supply chain. 

This report tracks progress and gives an update on achievements, whilst outlining the urgent action needed to not only deliver on targets but create a sustainable supply chain and prioritise climate action.

Our annual UK Surplus Food Redistribution data indicates solid progress in 2022 with approximately 170,000 tonnes of surplus food being received by redistribution organisations, equating to 400 million meals with a value of more than £590 million.

The scale of plastic pollution from composts and digestates, its potential impact and opportunities for its mitigation are largely unquantified. This project has explored some of these questions to develop an understanding of the knowledge base and data gaps.

From new voluntary agreements in Colombia and Denmark to engaging citizens in 12 countries through Food Waste Action Week, our Annual Report gives an insight into what WRAP was busy working on in 2022/23. 

Globally, food waste on farms is estimated to be around 1.2 billion tonnes, resulting in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 2.2 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (WWF, 2021). Tackling the issue of food surplus and waste on farms can bring significant business benefits. Research suggests that reducing food surplus and waste to the minimum reported rates can increase profits by up to 20% for farm enterprises (WRAP, 2021).
