Projects in Africa
WRAP works globally with governments, businesses, and communities to deliver practical solutions to improve resource efficiency within plastics, food and textiles.
We have worked collaboratively in Africa with leading local organisations to deliver the following projects.
Plastics
WRAP has worked to support the development and delivery of Plastics Pacts around the world including those in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Network of Pacts.
We have worked collaboratively across Africa to develop several Plastics Pacts they are;
Plastics Pact South Africa
WRAP have been working with WWF, SAPRO and GreenCape in South Africa to build the SA Plastics Pact which launched in January 2020. The Pact now has 24 business members from plastic producers to recyclers, including the whole value chain and 19 supporters who have been working together to develop their Roadmap and implement the identified actions.
Plastics Pact Kenya
WRAP worked with organisations locally to develop and set up a Plastics Pact in Kenya. WRAP continues to provide strategic support alongside the MAVA Foundation. The Kenya Plastics Pact is part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact Network.
WRAP training modules
WRAP has developed a series of online training sessions to support the creation and management of voluntary agreements. The seven modules cover a variety of topics (stakeholder management, communications, funding) and were developed with the support of the MAVA Foundation.
Food
Food Waste
WRAP has worked with organisations locally in South Africa to deliver a Food Waste Voluntary agreement;
The voluntary agreement is part of a project called FLAWLESS (Halving Food Loss And Waste by Leveraging Economic Systems). The project covers Indonesia, South Africa and Mexico working to halve food loss and waste by leveraging economic systems.
Other global work
Work to tackle food waste and plastic pollution continues in Africa and other areas in the region are being explored.
