A proven model for tackling plastic pollution
The way that we currently produce and use plastics poses a major risk to people and the planet. The Plastics Pact Network is a globally coordinated response to this world-wide problem. Plastic Pacts have achieved the elimination of over 360,000 tonnes of problematic and unnecessary plastics, meaning that billions of items have been removed from circulation.
As the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee assembles in Ottawa, we are highlighting the impact of The Plastics Pact Network. This global network convened by WRAP and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, stands as a globally aligned response to plastic waste and pollution and serves as a vital mechanism for nations to fulfill their obligations under the forthcoming Global Treaty to End Plastic Pollution.
Our network's work, rooted in a Blueprint for collaborative systems change, now spans every continent, engaging 18 countries and over 900 local and global organisations.
Six years in, we have a proven model for tackling plastic pollution. In some countries, rates of recycled plastic in packaging have tripled. Thanks to Plastics Pacts, billions of items using problematic or unnecessary plastic have been eliminated.
While this progress is significant, some challenges are systemic and require the broader scope of a Global Plastics Treaty to address effectively. Our briefing for policymakers contains a summary of our policy recommendations.
Here's what we've learned
- Proven Impact - Plastics Pacts have proven to be an effective model for delivering impact. Thanks to them, tens of billions of problematic or unnecessary plastic items have been eliminated, avoided and redesigned, showcasing significant achievements at national, regional, and global levels in a short timeframe.
- Complementary Action - while the Plastics Pact Network demonstrates the swift and impressive impact that can be achieved through collaborative voluntary action, there is a need for additional and more ambitious, binding policy measures, as well as accelerated voluntary business action.
Inform and Enable Global Commitments - Plastics Pacts are uniquely placed to inform and fulfil on Global Plastics Treaty commitments, at pace. With additional funding, they are ready to be scaled up contributing significantly to the treaty's success.
