This webinar reviews the existing evidence and new qualitative research on why people contaminate and what are the implications for intervention development and local authority communications.

In 2020 WRAP carried out an options appraisal on behalf of a medium sized Waste Collection Authority in the midlands to compare the cost and performance of a range of collection scenarios in preparation for necessary changes to its household waste collection service.

During July and August 2019 WRAP, and communications agency Cutting Edge Marketing, provided the Council with advice and support to help develop clear communications and messaging that would enable them to engage effectively with their householders on the introduction of the new recycling services. 

Hart District Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council are neighbouring local authorities in Hampshire. WRAP was asked to provide support to help each authority design and produce new communications materials and provide tailored advice on developing and delivering targeted communication campaigns.

In 2018, WRAP carried out a collection options appraisal on behalf of a medium sized unitary authority in the South East of England.

In 2017 WRAP supported a large unitary authority in the north of England to assess the cost and performance implications of a range of alternative household waste collection scenarios that met the requirements of the ‘Framework for greater consistency in household recycling’.

With the principle of ‘consistency in household recycling’ underpinning many of the proposals in the Government’s Resources & Waste Strategy, this webinar will share some of the key findings from WRAP’s ‘consistency’ support, highlighting how different collection scenarios performed in our studies and, for two-tier authorities, how the costs and benefits might be shared.
