Anaerobic digestion processing systems operate in different ways. For example, material may be fed into a reactor in distinct batches, or in a continuous flow.

WRAP has been supporting UK retailers of bagged growing media, plants and field horticultural products to join the transition to a more sustainable growing media industry.

IVCs can be used to treat food and garden waste mixtures. These systems ensure that composting takes place in an enclosed environment, with accurate temperature control and monitoring.

This report details the research into a standardised stability test method that is capable of being used to measure compost stability consistently in laboratory conditions and can be used as a standard test throughout the UK and potentially Europe.

This cost benefit analysis is based on the design stage of a project to construct a new composting facility. The project value is approximately £3.2 million. The study found that there was a total potential saving (net of implementation cost) of 2.2%.

Concerns about the potential presence of plant and human or animal pathogens are a major limitation to the increased up-take of composted waste by end-users of high-quality horticultural growing media. 

Windrow composting is used for processing garden waste, such as grass cuttings, pruning and leaves in either an open air environment or within large covered areas where the material can break down in the presence of oxygen.

This research focused on the identification of end market applications for post-consumer polyethylene film packaging derived from UK kerbside co-mingled collection in delivery bags, silage sheeting, storage and transport crates, store mannequins and automotive parts.
