New report demonstrates good progress being made across all three targets – food waste, carbon and water – in a challenging year for food and drink.

  • Agile response by signatories to COVID-19 sees new partnerships brokered, over £4m awarded to surplus food sector, and new ‘Best Before’ guidance for surplus food.
  • New Courtauld 2025 Supply Chain GHG Working Group convened to help make faster and more effective progress towards reducing GHG emissions in supply chains.
  • Collective action catchment projects mobilised under Courtauld 2025 Water Ambition.

The UK's model is being replicated in other countries to form a powerful global movement as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative. The Courtauld Commitment Water Ambition progress report sets out:

  • The physical, commercial and reputational risks facing UK food and drink businesses linked to water needs in their supply chains.
  • Steps businesses can take to reduce their exposure to water risks.
  • A ready-made framework of collective action projects in key sourcing locations which supply more than 2/3 of the UK’s vegetables (excluding potatoes) and 1/3 of the UK’s fruit.

The report, which has been developed with leading figures in the food supply chain, includes:

  • The risks to the UK food system over the next 10 years if we don't embrace a business unusual approach to the way we manufacture, sell and consume food;
  • The huge wealth of opportunities that developing a Flexible, Intelligent and Transparent (FIT) supply chain will open to the sector; and
  • How a "business unusual" approach will enable the sector to respond flexibly to changes in demand and weather patterns, with a transparent supply chain that will limit food scares and scandals.
