Applications for this funding has now closed.

WRAP and Innovate UK are delighted to be able to offer an International Circular Plastics Flagship Competition covering the areas of India, Chile, Kenya and South Africa.

  • A total of £1.7 million has been allocated to the Competition.
  • Eligible applicants can apply for funding that will range in value from £50,000 to £250,000.
  • Funding can cover 100% of eligible costs.
  • The aim of the fund is to support innovators, investors and key industry stakeholders interested in transforming the global plastic packaging supply chain within these countries.

Please note that if you do not have existing partnerships within these countries, WRAP will be able to facilitate this. Please indicate whether support with this will be required within your application.

A webinar was held for all interested parties on Thursday 2nd December 2021. A recording is available to view below.

We are looking for organisations who can demonstrate demand driven innovation by sourcing solutions that help meet specific Plastic Pact targets to reduce plastic pollution in India, Chile, Kenya and South Africa. We believe this will open opportunities for UK businesses, innovators and in-country partners to work collaboratively to address the in-country challenges.

The Programme aims to catalyse partnerships to address one of the world’s most urgent and escalating environmental challenges and demonstrate how innovation can contribute towards systematic change.

Applications to this fund closed on 13 January 2022.  Late applications cannot be accepted.

International Circular Plastics Flagship Competition FAQ

If you have further questions that are not answered by the Guidance Document or these FAQs, please contact us

My organisation is not a UK registered entity, can I apply for funding under this scheme?

The International Circular Plastics Flagship Competition is open to applications from UK entities only, and applicants must hold a UK bank account. If you are an organisation registered in India, Chile, Kenya, or South Africa and you would like to be involved, please approach your UK registered partners about collaborating on a project that meets the scope of this scheme.

Can I run my pilot trial in a country other than India, Chile, Kenya, or South Africa?

No. The focus of this scheme is to address the challenges highlighted by the Plastics Pacts of these countries. Therefore, feasibility studies and pilot trials must focus on India, Chile, Kenya, or South Africa.

Can my proposal / intervention target more than one of the four listed countries?

Yes. You may have an intervention or proposal that meets the challenges of more than one of the four listed countries, and you may wish to conduct feasibility studies and pilot trials in multiple countries. Please submit a separate application for each country in which you wish to conduct your feasibility study. Please note, there is a finite budget for this scheme and funding will be awarded per country. Therefore, if your application for one country is successful it may be unsuccessful for another country, if there is a greater level of competition focusing on a particular country.

What are the plastics challenges faced by India, Chile, Kenya, and South Africa?

Please refer to the WRAP International Circular Plastics Flagship Challenges document that is available to download from the WRAP Funding page.
